Steal It Back!
When someone is arrested during Critical Mass, not only does the person have to navigate
the city's legal system; their bicycle does too. Critical Mass arrestees have
their bikes seized as "evidence" to be used against them in court.
Freewheels started the Steal It Back program to provide arrestees with a
bicycle on-loan, usually the same night they are arrested. We purchase bikes sold by the pallette-load at
police auctions, Freewheels volunteers fix them up, and we lend them to Critical Mass arrestees free of
charge until they retrieve their own bicycles.
